When designing window dressings, linings are a very important part of the entire process. Do you need thick interlining to help cover a draughty door, or would you be better with a light cotton lining allowing the sun to shine in? At Sophie Sews, we’ve got years of experience in picking the right linings for each window we’ve dressed, so keep reading to find out our top tips when choosing the right lining for your windows.
Interlining
Interlining is our go-to choice for any room with single glazed windows, or old doors that let in the cold. Interlining will not only insulate your room, keeping in the heat which will save you money in the long run, but interlined curtains also look gorgeous! The interlining will add weight to your curtains making them look and feel fuller, which in turn helps your curtains to drape beautifully, whether puddled on the floor or just skimming off your floor.

Blackout
Our blackout lining is a must for almost all rooms, not just bedrooms. It has thermal technology meaning that in the summer, closing your curtains or blinds will help keep your room cooler, and vice versa in the winter months. Blackout lining also helps keep the coloured or patterned fabric you choose, looking just as it did in our fabric book. Allowing sunlight to come through your window dressing by not using blackout lining, will give your fabric a slight yellow tinge on bright sunny days.
Decorative
We are always on the lookout for new fabrics and designs, and have found this year that patterned linings are becoming more popular. A decorative lining is fantastic for a roman blind going onto a window which is overlooked, or for a curtain being used to divide two spaces. At Sophie Sews we now offer a range of neutral and colourful striped linings, both with and without blackout.
