This year was predicted to be a year of embracing natural materials, with a focus on sustainability and a colour palette inspired by mother nature herself. We have most definitely seen this trend spring to life this summer, so we thought we would share with you some of the fabric trends that we predict are going to be favourites of ours well into 2024.
Beautiful boucle
Boucle has been a firm favourite in our homes for a few years now so we don’t see this trend disappearing anytime soon. Its popular cosy texture makes boucle the perfect material for an occasional chair in a bedroom, or a big armchair in a living room placed right by a roaring fire. You’ll usually find boucle furniture available in a variety of neutral or earth toned colour ways, making it a very contemporary fabric perfect for someone trying to update their home interiors. If you’re worried about little ones or pets ruining the light colour of your boucle furniture, we recommend upholstering in a fabric that has an inherent layer of protection. Warwick are fantastic at this and at Sophie Sews we have reupholstered many chairs in Warwick fabrics due to the variety of stain resistant fabrics they offer.

Blast from the past
One trend that we didn’t see being popular for as long as it has been is the revival of 1970’s interiors! Think brown, orange and green altogether in one bold and geometric pattern. This trend has brought pieces such as brown leather sofas back into style but with a twenty first century update. Such as using sustainable faux leather which is not only good for the environment, but also good for your long list of house cleaning chores as faux leather is extremely easy to look after. When pairing leather furniture with curtains, cushions and rugs, you’ll want to look for materials which are soft and natural such as cotton and linen. Clarke & Clarke’s Formation collection is a perfect example of this, with its 1970’s inspired geometric patterns which are all printed on fabrics made of 100% cotton.
Rattan is still all the rage
Rattan has been a popular material for interior designers for as long as we can remember. With its natural oak colour it works well with a variety of colour palettes and also pairs well with so many other materials. Whether your interior style is boho, retro, or minimalist, we’re certain you’ll find a rattan piece of furniture perfectly suited to your home. At Sophie Sews we’ve loved seeing the popularity of rattan lamp shades becoming more prominent, with brands such as Pooky offering ceiling, wall and table lamps with beautiful and on-trend rattan shades. We recommend pairing rattan pieces with similar earthy tones such as green and cream, as this can bring a real warmth to any interior.
